We have an incredible HR team and are now adding to the team due to an increased demand for services. Reporting to the Senior Director of HR, the HR Business Partner is a part-time employee with a Generalist’s expertise. This individual is accountable for providing HR services to our nonprofit and social enterprise clients in the areas of recruitment, on-boarding, staff training, performance management, compliance, employee relations, payroll support, benefits administration, and other high-touch human resource service areas and projects.

This role will be hybrid remote and in-person, with some work completed at home, some onsite at our clients’ office, some at our office in San Diego, CA. Must live in or near San Diego, CA.

What You Will Bring:

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive HR experience, 3-5 years HR Generalist experience, including at least 2 years in an HR Director level role or equivalent.
  • Possess at the minimum a PHR or PHR-CA certification or equivalent; or willing to obtain the certification within six months.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal employment regulations, laws and best practices; knowledge of CA employment laws and regulations required.


Skills You’ll Have:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, timely and professionally and with a sense of urgency with clients and assess organizational needs.
  • Nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong experience using Microsoft Office, Google Drives, Gmail and various payroll and HRIS software/ systems (ADP Run, Gusto, Paylocity, Bamboo HR, etc.);
  • Enthusiastic team player with a strong commitment to create a positive and engaging work environment.
  • Outgoing with ability and desire to exceed internal and external customer expectations.
  • Strong work ethic and proven administrative skills, including highly organized and detailed oriented
  • Excellent critical thinker and problem solver; able to make solid judgments and data-based decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to hold personal and client information strictly confidential.
  • Proven ability to function in a multi-tasking, multi-client environment with competing priorities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a friendly and professional demeanor.
  • Comfortable in new, dynamic, and varying professional and business environments.
  • Union experience is helpful, but not required.
  • Experience in project management, managing project schedules and timelines, creating agendas for weekly meetings, experiencing writing emails with detailed instructions.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support the organization and team in monitoring and completing short and long-term goals in alignment with the service proposal and specific needs for our clients.
  • Assist our clients in becoming fully compliant with federal and state regulations and laws.
  • Support full cycle recruitment, hiring and onboarding as needed.
  • Implement and maintain system and process for personnel record keeping and documentation.
  • Develop/refine job descriptions, performance review processes, and Employee Handbooks;
  • Provide training and development for Client employees, as needed.
  • Perform benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, communicating benefit information to employees and providing open enrollment support.
  • Provide payroll support, i.e. time off tracking, timesheet review, etc.
  • Implement and support performance management process including coaching and counseling.
  • Provide HR risk management assessment for each client annually.
  • Manage and/or implement HRIS and other automation/technology solutions to.
  • Oversee and manage employee relations.
  • Actively participate in administrative staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars.
  • Hours will vary based on customer needs but can be as much as 20-27 hours per week.

  • Competitive Compensation- The hourly range for this role is $35-$40 per hour, DOE. Candidates are encouraged to have other means to supplement their income.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting; regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
