Communications and Marketing Specialist

The mission of Indigenized Energy is to pursue Tribal energy sovereignty through trusting partnerships and innovative programs that grow our collective capacity to unleash the power of renewable energy. Indigenized Energy (IE), fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Tribal communities through sustainable and renewable energy initiatives. Our work, rooted in the principles of energy sovereignty and environmental stewardship, has been recognized and supported by prominent foundations such as the MacArthur Foundation, Energy Foundation, and Builders Initiative.

Job Summary

The Communications & Marketing Specialist (C&MS) role involves a mix of project management, administrative and creatives tasks that support the organization's evolving marketing and communication strategy which currently includes digital marketing (earned, owned, paid); public relations; small - midsize events for donors, partners and energy leaders; internal communications; and some Tribal communications. The C&MS supports efforts to acquire, engage and deepen relationships with donors, sponsors, and strategic partners and to speak with accuracy and sensitivity to, and about, the Tribal communities we serve. The C&MS will be proactive, detail-oriented, collaborative, and passionate about energy sovereignty or climate justice, and will bring a growth mindset to this rapidly-growing and impactful nonprofit organization.

Areas of Responsibilities

Public Relations and Media Support

  • Support the organization’s earned media strategy including developing media pitches, drafting press releases, communicating with monitoring press coverage, Assist with managing public relations activities, including outreach to media outlets, to support positive coverage of the organization’s initiatives.

Social Media Strategy

  • Design and lead a social media strategy that aligns with overall marketing, communications, and fundraising goals. Create and schedule regular posts across 3+ platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter), engage with users, and track and report performance metrics and lead generation.

Content Creation

  • Support the development of content for digital, print, and social media channels, ensuring it aligns with the organization’s voice and mission.

CRM and Digital Asset Management

  • Collect, label, store, share, organize, and retrieve digital assets from our growing library of content. Manage e-marketing CRM including inputting, segmenting, and deduping contacts and ensuring contact information is shared between departments and CRMs.

Collaboration with Fundraising Team

  • Collaborate closely with the fundraising team to develop and implement aligned communication strategies that enhance the impact and reach of fundraising campaigns, ensuring consistency across all platforms.

  • Support the creation of compelling donor-centered communication materials that include a clear call to action and which demonstrate organizational impact. to retain and expand donor and sponsor bases, ensuring messages are clear and impactful.

Brand Consistency

  • Ensure all communications are Native-led and align with the organization’s brand identity, mission and values.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, digital marketing, public relations, or a related field.

  • Experience in a communications or marketing support role, preferably in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.

  • Strong skills in digital marketing, social media management, and public relations.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail in writing and editing copy.

  • Experience creating compelling content for a variety of communication channels with emphasis on social media platforms.

  • Familiarity with social media metrics and basic analytics.

  • Expertise in building and maintaining relationships with funders, tribal communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Excellent organizational and strategic planning abilities to create comprehensive funding strategies and manage financial aspects of grants and contracts.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of partners, including tribal communities, government entities, and funding agencies.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively to both internal and external audiences.

  • A deep commitment to advancing tribal energy sovereignty and empowering Native American communities through capacity building and mentorship.

  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner with tribal nations.

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Google Suite, and internet.

  • Strong customer service, negotiation skills and ability to interact with employees at all levels throughout the company.

  • Willing and able to travel occasionally, including overnight travel.

  • Enthusiastic team player who understands the dynamic of working in a matrixed organization

  • Outgoing with ability to provide excellent customer service to staff and external partners

  • Excellent critical thinker and problem solver; able to make solid judgments and decisions

Compensation & Benefits: Negotiable based on qualifications and experience. We have a comprehensive and competitive benefits package for full time employees including health insurance and paid time off.
