Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Job Summary

The CFO will be a key member of the executive team, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. This includes strategic financial planning, financial reporting, budgeting, and risk management. This position requires a strong leader with a solid foundation in nonprofit finance and accounting, an entrepreneurial aptitude, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and a commitment to customer service. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the energy sector, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record of driving financial success in a high growth non-profit environment.

Areas of Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and implement the organization’s financial strategy to support its mission and goals.

  • Create and manage budgets, financial forecasts, and long-term financial plans.

  • Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and executive team.

  • Monitor and analyze financial performance identifying areas for improvement and risk management.

  • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Oversee all aspects of financial management including accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, and grants management.

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, reports, and audits.

  • Maintain robust financial controls and procedures to safeguard the organization’s assets.

Fundraising and Grant Management

  • Collaborate with the development team to secure funding from donors, grants, and other funding sources.

  • Manage the financial aspects of grants, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance.

  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, grantors, and financial institutions.

Operational Efficiency

  • Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

  • Optimize financial processes and systems for efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring sufficient liquidity for operations and programs.

Risk Management

  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, ensuring compliance with all financial regulations and standards.

  • Oversee insurance coverage and risk management strategies.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure financial integrity and transparency.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a key financial advisor to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and senior leadership team.

  • Provide financial insights and support to program managers and other departments.

  • Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making processes

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related discipline; MBA and active CPA is a plus

  • Ability to provide succinct and responsive updates and reporting to leadership in a professional manner

  • At least 15 years of experience with 5 years in a senior financial-management role (CFO preferred), partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies

  • Experience in the design of financial and accounting systems that are responsive to the unique needs of a start-up non-profit organization.

  • Experience working with a fiscal sponsor and various prominent financial institutions, nonprofits, and foundations.

  • Significant experience in or knowledge of GAAP accounting, preference toward nonprofit experience including sophisticated fund and federal grant accounting, compliance, auditing, and reporting

  • Knowledge of nonprofit tax issues and experience in preparing and/or reviewing Form 990

  • High proficiency with QuickBooks Online, Salesforce, Excel, HRIS and payroll systems, and other team management software preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills

  • Enthusiastic team player who understands the dynamic of working in a matrixed organization

  • Outgoing with ability to provide excellent customer service to staff and external partners

  • Excellent critical thinker and problem solver; able to make solid judgments and decisions

Compensation & Benefits: The salary range for this position is $120,000-$140,000 per year and is negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
