Organizing Director

Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN), fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, is a community collaborative comprised of thousands of partners, including residents of City Heights, businesses, schools, faith and cultural organizations, and public and private agencies. Mid-City CANís mission is to create a safe, productive, and healthy community through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing. Approaching its 30th Anniversary, Mid-City CAN plays an essential role in the community of City Heights and the region by facilitating dialogue, identifying common issues, spearheading advocacy efforts, and training residents to take leadership roles in affecting change.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Organizing Director supervises Mid-City CANís community organizing and policy advocacy. The Organizing Director directs staff in developing, executing and managing organizing campaigns, policy advocacy, and special projects as assigned. The Organizing Director leads and supports a team of Community Organizers, Policy Advocates, Base-Builders and/or Canvassers, in achieving campaign goals, building the resident base, building power, developing and recruiting leaders, mobilizing members for actions, and maintains relationships with key coalitions and partnering officials. The Organizing Director also executes management and leadership responsibilities.  

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Effectively communicate Mid-City CANís mission and vision
  • Demonstrate and ensure high standards of conduct and commitment in approach to work
  • Adapt strategically and proactively to changes in campaign environment
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers, administrators, and other agencies and a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop special projects such as ballot campaigns, in a manner that ensures a high level of on-going performance, motivation, and a culture of continual growth and development among staff
  • Work with staff and members of the Momentum Teams in developing leadership capacity and motivate them to perform at the highest level of quality
  • Interact with Mid-City CAN Coordinating Council (board of directors) and committee members and attend board meetings as directed


  • Supervise assigned staff
  • Assign duties to staff by explaining how those duties are to be done, providing clear timelines, measurable goals, and communicating a vision for success
  • Execute internal organizational operations to maximize productivity and efficiency of staff performance
  • Coordinate the execution of staff work plans, Momentum Team campaign charts, and media plans, to move Momentum Teams to action
  • Ensure staff maintains focus and alignment with their work plans and Momentum Team campaigns through their daily activities
  • Manage staff performance by completing performance evaluations, setting goals, holding staff accountable to progress, addressing problems through corrective actions, and praising good performance/accomplishments 
  • Conduct regular, on-going supervision discussions and team meetings with staff to provide constructive feedback, guidance, and mentoring
  • Provide staff with assistance and support in thinking strategically, resolving dilemmas, and coordinating shared learnings.
  • Manage conflict by intervening and resolving concerns and complaints among staff or collaborative members
  • Conduct hiring, evaluations, disciplinary actions, and terminations in conjunction with supervisor, the human resources staff of the fiscal sponsor
  • Enforce personnel policies to ensure staff compliance with policies and procedures 
  • Conduct regular staff meetings while ensuring staff attendance and completion of required program reports on time 
  • Manage organizational risk and liability through strong personnel management and by ensuring appropriate policies are in place
  • Approve time sheets, travel, and requests for time off

Programming and Community Organizing

  • Implement organizational strategies on a daily basis
  • Lead the design and execution of campaign efforts such as canvassing, policy advocacy, phone-banking, community events, voter engagement, actions, and other activities
  • Research campaign targets, develop strategies, conduct power analysis, and assist staff in daily implementation.
  • Develop Mid-City CAN campaign and policy goals and objectives
  • Create and execute campaign plans and work plans, including timelines, roles, and resources, using Mid-City CAN planning tools. Analyze and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements
  • Deliver custom program materials, modules, and simulations based on the Mid-City CAN tool kit and methodology, as well as training others in their application
  • Ensure a quarterly power analysis among Momentum Team members and compliance with voter engagement and other regulations 
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, control, and direct, day-to-day campaign efforts
  • Ensure continuity across organizational units of Mid-City CAN
  • Write and/or review program reports and prepare them for approval 
  • Respond quickly in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with competing priorities
  • Develop and implement special projects as assigned 
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor or equivalent degree in community development, social work, community organizing, ethnic studies, and /or commensurate experience in community organizing and working with local residents in a collaborative context required
  • Or, Bachelor degree, in business administration, nonprofit management or organizations development
  • Community organizing or leadership training strongly desired, such as certificates from: Institute for Cultural Affairs, Gamaliel Foundation, PICO National Network, Center for Third World Organizing, Consensus Organizing Center, or comparable organizations
  • 3-5 years experience in union or community organizing role with a proven track record of campaign wins and base-building, plus 3-5 years hands-on management experience
  • Bilingual a bonus (Spanish, Somali, Swahili, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Other language)
  • Ability to generate data-driven reports and briefs for informed decision-making and reporting purposes
  • Possess a passion for social justice that translates to daily interactions
  • Ability to build consensus and effectively manage conflict
  • Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced flexible environment and meet deadlines
  • Ability to self-direct, take initiative, and work independently, while also being able to galvanize a team under pressure
  • Exceptional oral and written communication, facilitation, and public speaking skills
  • Ability to balance conflicting demands and meet last-minute requests
  • Ability to work with and maintain positive relationships with diverse constituencies and sensitivity in dealing with diversity issues including race, gender, sexual orientation, economic status
  • Flexible and ability to adapt to learning new ideas and concepts, responding to changes, and last-minute requests from policy makers

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to maintain etiquette in a professional environment, and exude a positive attitude
  • Ability to conduct overnight travel for training and advocacy required 30% of time
  • Ability to work flexible hours, weekends and evening work required 30% of time
  • Access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job-related tasks
  • Access to cell phone for work purposes


Physical Requirements and Work Environment: Work is performed in an office or community setting; employee regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6 to 8 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Position involves regular use of a computer and keyboard, telephone, and face-to-face communications; employee should be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position works in community settings, may be standing at event table, and walks neighborhood for several hours on as needed basis. The employee may spend periods of time sitting, standing, or walking. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


Compensation: The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $65,000 - $75,000 and commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.
