Who are we?

Mission Edge is a social enterprise located in Liberty Station in San Diego. While we are formally incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we operate like a mission-driven for-profit business. We believe that to sustain real, good impact, the social sector must be supported by earned revenue. We are genuine do-gooders with real business savvy determined to make the social sector more sustainable.

The Impact Lab

The Mission Edge Impact Lab provides underserved small business owners with ten weeks of custom, individualized finance support from our CFOs who help them grow their business revenue and personal income, ultimately establishing a financially stable business and lifestyle.

This is a part-time (like really part-time, 10 to 40 hours per MONTH), hourly role with a compensation range of $60 to $75 per hour, commensurate with experience, reporting to the Impact Lab Operations Manager of Mission Edge. This position will be remote, it would be rad if you reside in San Diego but remote candidates will be considered.

The Role
The Mission Edge Impact Lab is growing rapidly, and we are seeking to add an outgoing and smart Small Business CFO Consultant to our team! The CFO consultant will be responsible for working with the small businesses enrolled in our Impact Lab Program. This role is instrumental to the growth of Mission Edge’s position in the United States entrepreneurial ecosystem. This person will get to work with entrepreneurs and help drive social innovation in our community!

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced CFO consultant to join our dynamic team. This role is ideal for someone who specializes in providing strategic financial guidance to small businesses (typical annual revenue is $50k to $250k.) The Small Business CFO Consultant will work with multiple clients, offering the expertise and insights of a CFO.

What You’ll Do

You will be supporting small businesses to be successful by helping them truly understand their financial position. You will work with them one-on-one to determine their unique financial needs such as: costs of goods sold, expenses, profit margin, break-even point, runway, scalable hiring plans, and an actionable three-year financial plan for their business. These engagements will be over the course of ten weeks. How are you going to do this? You are going to:

  • Meet with small business owners one-on-one virtually every week.
  • Ask lots of questions to determine their current financial standing and also where they want to go.
  • Dive into their financials and give them candid feedback on what is working and what needs some help.
  • Develop simple short and long-term financial forecasts that the business owner can maintain for years to come without the need for a financial pro like yourself.
  • Be a great listener and trusted partner.
  • Demonstrate strong and effective communication skills.
  • Document the progress and outcomes of each meeting using Monday.com for seamless tracking and continuity.
  • Attend mandatory 30-minute weekly Impact Lab team meetings.
  • Provide office hours to entrepreneurs beyond the scope of the 10-week Impact Lab Program.

What You Will Bring

  • Real-world, actionable CFO expertise, grounded in practical experience rather than merely theoretical knowledge, providing substantial and relevant insights beneficial to small businesses
  • Solid communication skills whereby you can communicate financial concepts effectively to non-financial entrepreneurs
  • Advanced Excel skills to create simple and usable financial projections
  • Bilingual Spanish required for this position
  • Exceptional ability to effectively manage and balance the diverse needs of multiple small businesses simultaneously.
  • Experience in client-facing roles and ability to establish rapport
  • Time management
  • Tech-savvy and/or open to learning new tools such as Monday.com, Basecamp, Google Suite, etc
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Hours will vary based on when the program is active, but is expected to be approximately 10 to 40 hours per month. The hours will take place during weekdays, but the times will be flexible (mix of day and evening) depending on the availability of the small business owners. The position will be remote.

To apply please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining why you are a great fit for this role and why a part-time position aligns well with your current professional goals. If you're ready to bring your financial acumen to a role where you can make a significant impact, we'd love to hear from you.
